Here are the key developments that you need at this stage:■ The CBI probe into the killing of a journalist by the National Herald and a senior BJP leader has not concluded yet.
CBI has not yet received any reply to its plea seeking a probe into whether a case of culpable homicide has been registered against any party and whether the case can be forwarded to the Supreme Court.
This has been a sticking point for the CBI since July, when it submitted its plea to the court seeking a CBI probe in the case.
The CBI had filed a fresh application for an extension on the date of the court hearing.
In its plea, it alleged that the police and the CBI are failing to register the case against the senior BJP leaders.
In the meantime, the CBI had also filed a writ petition challenging the arrest warrant of the senior leader, V Raghav Tandon, in the killing case.
It also alleged that Tandon had not been given the opportunity to respond to the CBI’s representations.
The CBI, however, has not decided whether to submit the writ petition to the apex court.
The senior leader has been remanded in judicial custody for 30 days.■ CBI has sent letters to several newspapers to question the timing of the CBI filing of the writ petitions and also to question media persons who wrote about the case in the newspapers.
The letters also include a letter from the Central Vigilance Commission, a body headed by a retired judge, asking them to take down articles in their newspapers.
These letters are likely to be addressed to a few media houses and will have to be followed by the CBI.■ The BJP, which had been demanding a CBI inquiry into the murder of the journalist, has now turned its focus on the issue of the BJP’s leader, Amit Shah, and his alleged involvement in the murder.
The party has also filed an FIR against Shah, who was the Gujarat chief minister at the time of the killing.
The BJP has said that Shah was the only person involved in the alleged murder.
“The CBI has come up with a list of people that the media is lying about, including Amit Shah,” a BJP leader told The Hindu.
“It is now clear that the BJP is behind the murder.”
The BJP has also asked the media to stop writing about Shah and his associates and have demanded an explanation from the government and CBI over the issue.
